Cowboy Bebop – Tank!

February 25, 2004 in Sheet Music

I did an arrangement of the opening Theme to the cartoon “Cowboy Bebop” way back in 2002. I gave it to a couple of local high schools, and the DVC Night Jazz Band. It’s pretty damn close to the original theme. Take a listen.

I’m making this and one other Cowboy Bebop Arrangement available. If you want more, you’ll have to beg or put some money in my Paypal account ;-) . I have arrangements of Cat Blues and Black Coffee and a couple others nearly done.

These need Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 and need have an account and be logged in to view and print these.

  1. It is totally an Alto.

  2. Yeah, I listened to it shortly after I commented. I wasn’t really listening to it close enough, but now I know it’s an alto. Thanks! Anyway, I’m going to get my jazz band to play your version to see if they like it. They LOVE Tank! and I hope they love your arrangement! I went through the parts and they are like right on! GREAT JOB! And the sax solo was transcribed perfectly! WAY TO GO! I was going to attempt to transcribe it, but I didn’t even try and now I don’t have to. Thanks!

  3. I have been looking for the score to Tank! everywheer and I’m so glad I finally found it. But alas when I try to open the score it says it’s password protected. I have Adobe Reader 7.8 and wondering if you could tell the password for it?

  4. It is password protected, but it will allow you to open it, view it, and print it. You can’t make any changes to it.

  5. My Dad, a tenor player for decades, says it’s a tenor… I argued about the high notes, but I agree with him that it’s easier for the tenor to makes those lower notes on that solo than an alto. About the high notes… he said that it’s possible to get that high with a tenor, if you’ve got a lot of control… and jst listening to that solo… yeah, he’s got a lot of control. Especially with the live version at the Shibuya AX.
I may be alto, but I agree with what you thoughtfirst, too. ^^

  6. Your dad has no clue then. Your who thesis is that the low notes are easier on tenor, but the high notes are easier if you “good control” on tenor? What? The low notes are totally in the range of an Alto. The whole tone of the solo is alto. How could you mistake it for a Tenor?

Serious, you and your dad need to go listen to some Alto sax recordings. Like Cannonball, Phil Woods, Eric Mariental, David Sanborn. The guy’s tone is like Eric’s.

  7. yeah, it doesn’t work. It says the file is damaged….

  8. No…….it works fine……

But if you haven’t read all the messages in this thread, then you probably shouldn’t download anything anyhow.

  9. hey crazy sax, can i get a copy of what planet is this from you when you are done. My high school jazz ensemble would really like to play it. we played Tank last year and it came ut amazingly well. I can send you a recording if you want.

  10. Um to clear this up for everyone. . .
The links work fine. When you download it, it may be in some weird extention (i got mine in .pl??) but just go to tools > folder options > view (the tab) > uncheck ‘hide extentions of known file types’ in the folder you have it in. Then just change the extentions of the files to .pdf Then it should work fine, on any machine, running anything.

  11. Sweeet! i’m gonna see if our middle school band will play this! Thanks Eric this rocks!

  12. I cannot thank you enough for doing this as I have been looking for TANK! sheet music for quite a while. I play bass trombone in my high school jazz band and this piece looks great. I would also be interested in hearing the recording you made to compare. Since it is no longer on the site, would it be alright if someone could email me a copy. Much appreciated. danny.waltho@gmail.com

  13. what can I say. wow. That’s an incredibly accurate arrangement. It makes me all warm and fuzzy to think of the dedication of some people. And the generosity of releasing something like this for the public. So tip of the hat to you sir. Great band, great cartoon, great arrangement.

  14. My jazz band back in Iowa used your arrangement this year for our jazz competitions. We got to Championships (we aren’t very good…we got 11th), but everyone was asking where we got the music and stuff. Thanks for allowing me to have the parts and helping me with the stuff. I played the Alto Solo myself and yes, it made me realize that it IS actually played on an alto and whoever thinks otherwise is dumb. It was fantastic. I got an Outstanding Jazz Soloist Award for it so thanks again!

  15. Yeah um…. i have Acrobat Reader 7 which should get it with no problem at all, but for some reason my browser encounters a problem with i click on the link, what’s wrong?

  16. What other arrangements have you done for Cowboy Bebop? Either than the ones you have listed.

  17. Click reload.

  18. hi. i’m from sparta high school in sparta, new jersey. i happened to come across your arrangement of tank in my search for one since i love the song so much. i showed my teacher and we tried it out at rehearsal. it sounds absolutely incredible. everyone fell in love with it almost instantly. we were wondering if we could have you permission to perform this piece live. if you require a licensing fee then that would be more than ok. we hope that we will be able to perform this awesome arrangement live. thanks

  19. The solo is no less than a six, and the main piece is no less than a four. That is the way I’d do it. Technically, the alto solo makes the entire piece a six anyway. There ya go.

  20. Seefu, I was watching a music video and while on the sheet music there is an alto playing that solo there was a tenor sax (go TENORS!) on stage. Either it was transposd from alto 2 tenor or that is the biggest alto sax i’ve ever seen.

  21. I just downloaded these pieces and the score, and from the looks of it, this may be one of the things our Jazz Band really needs to get the some new spice back in the mix!

Thank you so much for putting this together! This just looks amazing.

  22. There will be a newer, updated version of Tank coming soon. Cleaned up, more accurate alto solo, etc, etc.

  23. First of all, thanks Eric for arranging this piece, my school’s jazz band might use it. And secoundly, for everyone saying the solo isn’t alto, go here http://youtube.com/watch?v=v-TAxm00jOg

  24. I’ve been looking for this for weeks! I’ve tried looking for midis (none of which were very good), and even looked into buying the original score (but couldn’t find it on any but the shadiest of webpages). Thank you SO much.

I’m going to try this with my school’s pep band; we’ll see how it goes. The current arrangement looks amazing to me, which means this “updated” version will probably blow my mind.

(Reading all the comments about the files “not” working, and how it’s a “Tenor” sax was painful. You’re a more patient man than I.)

  25. Some of the comments about it not working were due in part to the old Slashcode software the site was running. And part of it was people not having Acrobat installed correctly.

As for the sax solo being a tenor……I have no comment other than STFU

  26. How’s the progress on editing Tank? I’m really anxious. I’m glad you are redoing the solo. It is a big part of the song.

  27. Um, it is a LOW priority……..so……..

  28. haha this post is fucking hilarious dano.

oh i cant resist joining in.

hey why doesnt this work on my computer?
can you transcribe some more cowboy bebop songs!
i swear to god. ive been playing trumpet for 39 years….the solo is definately a drum solo. not an alto.

  29. No, it’s obviously a TENOR drum solo. Geeze. WTF guy. Can’t you hear anything? Tenor DRUM. Not Alto. Not Alto sax.

It doesn’t work on your 1980s Acer PC cause Windows 2.0 doesn’t have Acrobat reader. Nor will it work on your Atari ST either. That is too bad.

Um, I’m over Cowboy Bebop. That is soo like 5 years ago. It’s all about Super Mario Galaxy now.

  30. Help! (And this has nothing to do with Acrobat reader, so don’t worry! I know what I need and everything and I promise not to bug you about it)

Anyway, I found this, yelled for joy, got an account, got signed in – and noooooow it says ‘You must be a regestered user to download this file’ What the heck?!?! I keep trying to sign in and it keeps sending me back to the home page, then I sign in and search ‘Tank!’ and get a list of results, and I checked and it’ll let me download ‘Rush’, it says I’m signed in for that, but not this! How come?! Am I doing something wrong? Is this file so old that it won’t let people download it?

I apologize in advance in case I’m missing something obvious, I have a bit of a head cold and so brain is a little fuzzy and it’s not working at it’s best…Anyway, any help you could give would be great, I’m gonna keep trying and see what happens…

    Thanks!
    -Naideana

  31. Wait – never mind! I would appear to be signed in now by some strange miracle! I don’t know how it happened, it’s weird. I’m sorry for bugging you with that long comment! It’s working now and that’s what counts!

    Sorry again!
    -Naideana

  32. Okay, this is my third comment today and I promise that it’s my last! I just wanted to say: OMIGOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you soooooooo muich! You’re a genius! This is so amazing! I absolutly love this song, but I couldn’t find a band arangment anywhere (unless of couse you count that book that cost like forty dollars! Ouch!) so I’d almost given up, then I found this page and it made me so very happy!

Everything worked just perfectly, and I didn’t have any problems! Please accept a very big thank you from the bottom of my heart! I’ve never meant anything so much in my life! This is super great! ^_^

    -Naideana

PS. Okay, I’ve posted enough comments now. Sorry!

  33. Wow, I hope I can get my middle school teacher to let us play this…
    :P
THANK YOU SO MUCH. People don’t pay enough attention to the saxophones…it’s always guitar or piano.
    Thankies.
