What Type Of Reeds Do You Like?

We’ve covered a number of Reed topics before. The Perfect Reed, What Reeds Are The Best?, The Never Ending Search For A Good Reed, and even Reed Cryogenics. I bring this topic up because I recently saw that Vandoren has recently introduced Flow Pack reeds. These reeds are sealed from the factory. Anyone tried these? Or the other huge selection of Vandoren Reeds (ZZ, V16, Java)? How about some of these other brands?

I’m currently using Rico Plasticovered Reeds on Alto and Tenor. On soprano I was using them, but I’ve switched back to Rico Jazz Select reeds (filed).

  1. i’ve been playing on Zz’s for about a year now and i gotta say i love them. I used to play on rico jazz selects 2h/3s but they died rather quickly on me and i was constantly having to replenish my reed supply (and before these la voz). i find Zz’s to have a much more pure and focused sound and allow me to do pretty much anything i want. i find them to also be a really flexible reed, i use them for some classical as well (this is definitely not a legit classical reed though).

  2. i recently discovered superial d.c. reeds and they really impressed me – no bad reeds in a box, they don’t warp and they are playable and nice-sounding from the very beginning. not cheap though but definitely worth the money.

  3. I been playing on them for almost three years now and wouldn’t think of playing on another brand of reeds. They are by far the most consistant reeds i have ever seen, and they sound amazing. everyone that i know that has tried them has never gone back.

  4. I try a lot of reed and always return to Vendoren Java 2 1/2.

  5. i have spent a lot of money finding the right reed and i found out that the mouthpiece defines the reed you need. on tenor i am playing a bob ackerman mp which is similar to the old otto links and here the rico royal jazz select (unfiled – because they live longer) give me the richest sound. on soprano i am playing a selmer metal mp where the dark alexander superial dc. are really amazing. on alto i am using a meyer 6 mp and need la voz reeds to get an more open sound. i think that especially on tenor reeds are very very important to get a comfortable feeling on your instrument. also working with a spoon or white paper om your reeds brings amazing results in performance. has anyone tried out this new packed vandoren reeds?

  6. I tried the Java reeds for both alto and soprano and found that they give very good tone and sound and whatnot. On bari, I’ve been impressed results with the Rico Jazz Select, having nursed a pair of them along for about five months, but I bought a box each of the Alexander DCs and Classiques, and from the short impression I’ve got of them, they are both excellent. I also tried the ZZs for bari, but found them too hard and hacked a bit of the back off of all of them and played them on bass clarinet with great results.

    I’ve played the standard ricos and vandorans around 3 and 2.5 for each and found I never got the right sound. I’m using a selmer c* but lately I picked up a vandoran ZZ and I’m loving it even with my sax which is in a really big need of a fix because os its pads and other problems, they still produce a beutiful tone, for my kenny G sax book and my harry potter classical stuff…. I play alto forgot to mention that. and before anyone asks the kenny g book is for all saxophones not just soprano.
