Sony MZ-NH900 Part 2

September 14, 2004 in Reviews

I’ve had my Sony MZ-NH900 for about a month now. Basically, I am not happy with it at all. First, the USB uploading sucks. Unless you own a Sony Vaio, you can not get your recordings out of Sonic Stage. Yes, Sony has promised a WAVE Exporter. No time frame, sometime this fall. Ok, right.

Second, I have only been able to get ONE successful recording out of the unit. The MIC jack and my Stereo Rode NT 4 mic do not get along. The last recording I did, one channel kept fading in and out. That has NEVER happened on my other unit (a Sony MZ90 I believe).

So, basically, I’m dumping it. I have just purchased a Marantz PMD-670. It does what it is advertised, and MacMall had a great deal on 2 gigabyte Compact Flash cards. Woohoo.

Sony, you dropped the ball. BIG TIME. If anyone is interested in a fairly new Sony MZ-NH900, let me know.

Sony MZ-NH900 USB Transfers

August 27, 2004 in Reviews

Some field tests of my new Minidisc recorder have been pretty positive. I tested the USB transferring of recorded audio (149 Minutes worth) to Sonic Stage. It works as advertised. Took about 10 minutes or so. However, you still can’t do anything with recordings transfered this way. Unless you own a Vaio, which supposedly you can make Audio CDs.

Sony has promised a Wave exporter program for Autumn (Fall?), but no one seems to know when this will actually arrive.

The potential is right here. Durable Minidisc recording, lossless or not, with fast USB transfers, great battery life, and extreme recording times (using compression). Just need a way to get the stuff out of Sonic Stage! Hurray Sony!

Sony MZ-NH900

August 23, 2004 in Reviews

Sony introduced a new, “better” version of it’s venerable Minidisc technology. The new version sports higher density discs, and different encoding methods, including high quality 94 Minutes of Linear PCM (IE: Lossless).

The minidisc player is huge step forward in a number of areas. Size, construction, battery life, features. The menus are a LOT easier to use than before.

However, Sony has horribly crippled the unit. Minidisc.org, probably the BEST site for info on Minidiscs, has, in its FAQ, something that suggests that Mic or Line recordings made on the unit can be uploaded via USB and exported. This is only PARTLY TRUE. You can upload it via USB, but you cannot get it OUT of Sony’s SonicStage. Unless you happen to own a Sony Viao Computer. Then you supposedly can make a CD from anything in SonicStage.

Thumbs down. BIG TIME. BIG TIME. Why should I be limited because I do not own a Sony Viao????

I give these new Sony units a 2 out of 10. Stick with the older generation, as you can get them for about $100. You’ll be stuck uploading in real time via the audio out, but that is basically what you get with the “new generation” units.

Don Menza Retires

February 22, 2004 in Articles

From this article in the Las Vegas Sun. Don has a number of very valid points. He should know, he’s been in the business 53 years. I think he raises a number of valid points, that the record business is more into looks and flash than actual music. I mean, look at all the “pop” artists out there.

Don, why not start you’re own label? Or team up with like someone who revolted like you?

MP3.COM Content to be Erased

November 21, 2003 in Articles

From this article: “Vivendi Universal recently sold the MP3.com domain to c|net, and instead of selling its archive, containing more than a million songs by 250,000 artists, the company will simply delete the content. Mike Robertson, founder and former CEO of MP3.com is currently pleading with Vivendi and CNET to allow archive.org to mirror the contents. Since many of these artists won’t be able to come up with alternate hosting in that timeframe, and many of them won’t even know it’s happening, what Robertson calls “the largest collection of digital works ever assembled” will cease to exist.”

Personally, CNet.com sucks. Their editors half the time don’t really know what the hell they are talking about. Their site is an Ad sponsered hype zone” where they talk about things people are “paying” them to talk about. I hope all these artists are able to get their stuff off MP3.com.

MMO – Jobim’s Bossa Nova’s

April 20, 2003 in Reviews

Jobim MMO CoverI just picked up a copy of Jobim’s Bossa Nova’s that Music Minus One publishes. I must say, having a few of the great Flute editions of Music Minus One publications (such as the J.S. Bach B Minor Suite), this work was a real let down…..First, they have some guy named John Sergenian (never heard of him, but he sounds good) play on the music with you on one track, then on another track, they have the backgrounds alone. Thats all good, but I don’t get why the saxophone is only in the right channel. If you have two tracks, essentially one without the saxophone, why didn’t they mix the saxophone stereo? I don’t get it.

The whole package is synthesized. And not very well either. For $29.98, you get a real saxophone play on half the tracks, and only in one ear. Yet, you get poorly synthed flute, trombone and strings in stereo. Why couldn’t they hire some real to play flute? I like the little counterpoint lines, but it’s too “cheezy”. And sometimes the guitar sounds real, but more often than not it comes off like Band in a Box, except Band in a Box’s guitar styles would blow this out of the water.

In all I’d avoid this play-along like the plague. I’d rather watch Anna Nicole Smith for 48 hours straight than waste $29 on this. Actually, I’d rather date Anna Nicole Smith than waste $29 on this play along again. Thats how bad it was. For people interested in a good play along with guitar, I suggest Vol. 93 and Vol. 98 by Aebersold. Both are excellent. For a play-along with strings, Vol. 97. However, I would like to see Jim Snidero do a play-along version of his great new album “Strings”. Playing with strings is a very different endeavor than the traditional rhythm section, and Snidero could really break new ground creating a play-along version.

I’m giving this Music Minus One a 2 out of 10. For maybe half the price I would recommend it. But it’s overpriced, and really not worth it.

Update: 04/21 02:28 GMT by E :I found some other problems with this playalong. There are a lot of notation errors. That really speaks to me of bad quality control. Shame Music Minus One!

How Not To Treat Your Band Members

February 1, 2002 in Articles

One of my friends sent this clip of a “professional” band leader chewing out his band. This is a leader of a Las Vegas band, and a very famous person as well.

Wow, people put up with this? Nice guy…….NOT!
