Band in a Box 12 for OS X

June 25, 2004 in Reviews

Yes, finally. It has arrived for OS X. Band in a Box 12 for Mac OS X. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles as the PC version, but it runs very very well in OS X. Using Quicktime to play instruments works, no stutters. You can even use Make Music’s sound fonts that come with Finale. Both work just fine. Plus, it supports CoreMidi. Life is good.

The version lacks Audio functions. Not that I have ever used that in Band in a Box. However I would like to see would be something like the Direct X Sound Canvas to Audio file ripping ability that the Windows Version has in the Mac OS X version. Maybe even adding support for Audio Units. It does allow the piping of it’s output to other MIDI Applications via RAX. Not sure if RAX is as good as Rewire support, but hey I’m happy it run well on OS X.

However…..Things that need to be fixed.

  • CoreMIDI. Great, it works. However, you can tell what the heck you are selecting. The list comes up PORT A, PORT B. Not “Roland Sound Canvas SC8820″, “Roland XV2020″. That is annoying. Very annoying.
  • Saving to Audio Files. High Quality files. Quicktime would be OK, but something like the Windows version that lets you rip to a high quality virtual sound canvas. That is the ONE feature that is really cool in the Windows version. Great for instantly making high quality exercises or demos. On the Mac version, it would be great for importing into like Garage Band.
  • Song Lists. It’s a neat little window that will display all the songs in a folder. However, can’t we take it a little further and allow it to handle nested folders? I mean, I’d love to be able to scroll through all 10,000 some BinaB files I have (all those public real book chord changes and stuff. It adds up). Right now, it doesn’t handle the job. I don’t think this would be a big programming issue at all.

That’s all. Good job PG Music! I am liking this program. Now, we just need it to be CURRENT with the Windows version, and I’ll be happy!

Band in a Box 2004 for OS X?

May 9, 2004 in Articles

PG Music’s Band in a Box is one of my favorite programs. The ability to create backgrounds in various styles, tempos, etc, etc. It’s an invaluable tool. Sadly, the Macintosh version has lagged behind for a while. The last update, version 11, was just for OS 9, and sorta/kinda works under OS X.

Anyhow, the latest Macconnection catalog had 2004 listed. They had been listing version 11 in previous issue. I’m wondering if PG Music is indeed close to a pending OS X release. Ideas? Rumors? Comments?

Update: 05/14 07:56 GMT by E :According to this thread on the PG Music message board, the OS X version is a port of version 11, and is expected in about 2 to 6 weeks….

I knew Herbie was into Apple computers, but not at this level. This article details Herbie’s experiences with Apple from the pre-Macintosh days. Herbie is very fluent on computers, owns 3 iPods, uses OS X, and loves the fact that his music is available on Apple’s iTunes Music Store.Wow. You da man Herbie! Except for that switching part to Sibelius from Finale. Thats bad Herbie, bad!
