Band in a Box 12 for OS X

Yes, finally. It has arrived for OS X. Band in a Box 12 for Mac OS X. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles as the PC version, but it runs very very well in OS X. Using Quicktime to play instruments works, no stutters. You can even use Make Music’s sound fonts that come with Finale. Both work just fine. Plus, it supports CoreMidi. Life is good.
The version lacks Audio functions. Not that I have ever used that in Band in a Box. However I would like to see would be something like the Direct X Sound Canvas to Audio file ripping ability that the Windows Version has in the Mac OS X version. Maybe even adding support for Audio Units. It does allow the piping of it’s output to other MIDI Applications via RAX. Not sure if RAX is as good as Rewire support, but hey I’m happy it run well on OS X.
However…..Things that need to be fixed.
- CoreMIDI. Great, it works. However, you can tell what the heck you are selecting. The list comes up PORT A, PORT B. Not “Roland Sound Canvas SC8820″, “Roland XV2020″. That is annoying. Very annoying.
- Saving to Audio Files. High Quality files. Quicktime would be OK, but something like the Windows version that lets you rip to a high quality virtual sound canvas. That is the ONE feature that is really cool in the Windows version. Great for instantly making high quality exercises or demos. On the Mac version, it would be great for importing into like Garage Band.
- Song Lists. It’s a neat little window that will display all the songs in a folder. However, can’t we take it a little further and allow it to handle nested folders? I mean, I’d love to be able to scroll through all 10,000 some BinaB files I have (all those public real book chord changes and stuff. It adds up). Right now, it doesn’t handle the job. I don’t think this would be a big programming issue at all.
That’s all. Good job PG Music! I am liking this program. Now, we just need it to be CURRENT with the Windows version, and I’ll be happy!
