Michael Brecker’s Tenor Sax Set up

March 19, 2002 in Articles

BIABfsg writes “I was listening to Michael’s “Nearness Of You” this morning. I have no doubt that this is a very well-produced album. (Producer is Pat Metheny) Does anyone know what is Michael’s tenor set up in this album?”

This is probably every saxophonists’ question. He uses a custom Guardala mouthpiece. He has an unusal setup because he has some sort of throat condition. He uses, if my memory serves me, a real open Guardala with real soft reeds. Like 2s or something. When he did a concert at CSU Hayward in 1998 he was messing around with a hard rubber link as well.

You could try posting or searching for his exact setup on Michael Brecker.Com. He posts there fairly frequently. I think this comment from Michael Brecker pretty much sums it up. It’s a personal thing.

Good question. I belive it was something like a Mark VI soprano with a Metal Selmer F mouthpiece.

Meyer Tenor Mouthpiece Problems

December 28, 2001 in Articles

saxxxxxxxxx maaaan writes “Well! I bought a jazz Meyer mouthpiece with a tip opening of 6 for my tenor sax and it just doesn’t play worth a flip, I use a 2 1/2 Rico and La voz medium my ligiture is the one that came with it.

Can you make any suggestions that might help!!
THANKS!!”

Lets see……

First, what did you play on before? Opening the same size as the Meyer? Same type of reeds?

Does the sax play ok when you use the old mouthpiece? Did you try out other mouthpieces before you bought that? Did it work when you tried it out?

I have never tried a Meyer on Tenor, though I have heard good things about them. I have a GREAT old meyer for Alto that I love to death. If the problem you’re having with the mouthpiece is perhaps tone/projection quality, then maybe you should try something else, maybe a metal Otto Link, or Metal Berg, or something else.

I’m just guessing here, you kinda need to explain what is and is not working with the mouthpiece…….

I can’t figure out what wrong with my Alto

saxdude writes “I switch back and fourth between my tenor(spensor) and alto(yamaha) and I cant figure out what is wrong. Every since I’ve started playing my tenor I can’t play wourth a flip on my alto anymore! I dont know what to do can you make any suggestions…”

Um, well, that doesn’t make any sense at all. I’m assuming that you have a good setup (mouthpiece/reed) on both Alto and Tenor. I don’t know anything about a Spensor Tenor. Are the key layouts on both horns the same? Do they feel the same?
