Windcontroller Group (Group Think)

April 17, 2006 in Articles

Over this weekend, I got into this heated argument on a Yahoo group about Wind Controllers. I was interested in perhaps getting a new EWI 4000 to supplement my practicing. I said in one post that I thought a lot of the people using the controller as a sax made it sound cheesy. And, honestly, the sounds do sound cheesy. And I stated that you should try to be a sax, or a flute at all because it just doesn’t sound right. Wow. The little people on that list blew up, calling my statements “stupid”, calling me “bipolar” when I said that the Garritan Jazz Band sounds sound good (but not good enough) and slandering me about everything under the moon. The moderator, Matt at Patchman Music decided to just remove me from the list without any explanation. Nice moderating there guy.

I thought it was really interesting that these guys have deluded themselves into thinking that playing a flute patch, or sax patch sounds as good as the real thing. One gem, was posted by this german guy “We emulators must have come very close to the “real thing” otherwise they wouldn’t feel to threatened and be so passionate about preventing emulation”. I totally don’t agree. You are doing a disservice to the music community. Whatever happened to tone? Isn’t tone the most important part of someone’s playing? If you are proficient on wind controller, why not just play the real instrument then? There is not much of a leap from EWI to clarinet. Why not just play it as it’s own instrument with it’s own unique sound?

Group Think

Ah, anyhow, the little group there seems to think not. Thus I got bounced, though people who slandered me seem to have been allowed to continue to post. I think the wind controller players are limiting themselves if they do emulation, or even think it sounds a “believable” substitute for a real instrument. Steps Ahead would not be on my iPod if Brecker was using a flute patch to play all those songs.

But what do you all think? EWI as a substitute for a real instrument? As it’s own entity (ala Brecker)? I am totally for the latter, and opposed to the former.

EWI Buying Advice

August 2, 2005 in Reviews

Professor writes “Advice needed: I am an alto player who would like to buy a MIDI wind controller. I read Scott Wilkinson’s May 2001 Electronic Musician piece, which was helpful but provides no buying advice for the uninitiated (and is out of date). Does anyone know where I can try out and/or buy these various controllers (EWI, WX5 or Softwind Synthophone– or the new EWI Brecker was playing recently). Any advice on which one to buy, where to try it, and where to buy it would be greatly appreciated. (I’m on the East Coast). Thanks.”

From what I can tell, the one Michael Brecker has been playing is current is a prototype from Niles Steiner. The Akai 3020s are being produced, but are still hard to find. And it’s really it’s own instrument, as it requires some practice to get used to and sound good on. The best solution right now seems to be the Yamaha WX5 coupled with the Yamaha VL70m. Paul Croteau was kind enough to share these two excellent transcriptions of his. Tee Bag off of the Steps album Smokin’ in the Pitt, and Sentimental Mood off the Steps Ahead album Live in Tokyo album. Excellent stuff! Thanks Paul!

Brecker Sportin’ a New EWI

September 6, 2004 in Articles

Brecker New EWISeems virtuoso Michael Brecker has taken up the EWI again. It is not the EWI of old, but a seemly newly designed one by Niles Steiner.

Here is a link to the Japanese Website that has information on it.

Tone Generator for Yamaha’s WX5

BIABfsg writes “What’s the good tone generator for Yamaha’s WX5, WX7? Thank you! Any tip would be appreciate!”

Everyone seems to recommend the Yamaha VL70M as a good match for a WX Controller.

WX or EWI or ???

December 3, 2001 in Articles

There was an interesting discussion on the Wind Synth list (sorry, I don’t know where the link is to subscribe to it) about which wind controller was the best.

I own a Yamaha WX-11 and an EWI3020 (and the related tone module). I hardly use them. The WX-11 is good because it plays more like a saxophone/clarinet to me. The only issue I have with mine is that it will start “note” sticking after about 5 minutes of play. Annoying.

The EWI3020 is it’s own instrument. It is sorta like a saxophone, but….

It’s not. I think someone on the Wind Synth list summed it up best. It’s like a recorder, IE: no keys to press down. The EWI is different from the Yamaha because pressing on the keys gives you a “aftertouch” effect. It also has something like 8 octaves too. The right thumb can do pitch changing as well.

Listening to Steps Ahead and early Michael Brecker albums made me get one. I remember asking him something about the EWI when he was the guest artist at CSUH. He said something to the effect that the EWI was requiring too much practice, and that he was more focused on his Tenor playing. I agree. The EWI is really an instrument in it’s own right. I’ll freely admit that I can’t play mine very well at all mainly due to the lack of practice.

I’m interested in sometime trying a WX5, which seems to have fixed a number of problems in the previous versions of the WX controllers. And having something thats made more to be a electric saxophone would be fun.

So, what do people out there own? An Akai EWI3020? Yamaha WX5? WX7? WX11? Use it much? Like it?

Brecker On EWI Clips

August 19, 2001 in Articles

The EWI-EVI page has some great video clips of Michael Brecker playing EWI from 1987 on VH1.

Too bad they don’t seem to repeat that stuff….I remember watching it while in High School………great stuff. I wish Brecker would get back into some EWI stuff as it seems so dead since he left the arena.

EWI Article in May Electronic Musician

The latest issues of Electronic Musician has an article about the current state of EWIs (Electronic Wind Instruments).

Perhaps now I might dust off the WX11 and Akai 3020 that I have…….naw…..
