Recording a Big Band in 5.1 Surround Sound

April 22, 2003 in Articles

I came across this article which describes how the University of Michigan went about recording the Count Basie orchestra in 5.1 surround sound. Very interesting stuff. Of course, you have to start with a good concert hall, which it looks like they have. Next, you need a beve of good mics. Nuemanns (M150s, TLM170s, KU100, KMS184 and KMS183), and a few Sennheiser Shotgun mics (MKH800, MKH50). That right there is a good $60K+ of mics, plus all that new recording equipment, and probably a few Nuemann U87s in there, we are talking major bucks.

The resulting SACD should be available in the fall. It will be interesting to see how it comes out.

While working on a new Pop play-along for my students, I thought that All Star by Smashmouth would work as a Jazz Band Arrangement. So, after about 3 hours of work…..here is the result. Enjoy!

Yoko Kanno

December 12, 2001 in Articles

Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m a Japanese Anime freak. I love Ninja Scroll, Record Of the Lodoss War, Macross, Macross Plus, etc, etc. My current favorite is Cowboy Bebop. Cartoon Network started showing this series on their Adult Swim lineup.

What really struck me when I first saw this series was the music. Very hip jazz! The intro, through out the series, background music, everywhere. After some digging I found out that a Japanese composer, Yoko Kanno is the genius behind the sounds in Cowboy Bebop. She is also behind the music to Macross Plus, Escaflowne, and more…..

What strikes me about the music is the broad influences she (and I hope I’m correct in saying that) has. Some of the songs sound bopish, others are bluesey, some sound like John Williams (with more hipness).

Anyone know more about her and her music? I’m anxiously awaiting my Cowboy Bebop DVD collection which includes the a CD of the music. Searching the net yielded about 5 albums of music from the Cowboy Bebop series.

Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band – Swingin’ For The Fences

December 5, 2001 in Reviews

One of my students turned me on to this CD. Probably because we started playing out of a Dan Higgin’s Jazz Etude book. After listening to the CD, I had to have it. It features some awesome arrangements by Gordon Goodwin, and solos by Arturo Sandoval, Eddie Daniels, Eric Martienthal, Dan Higgins, and more.

I don’t have anything negative to say, other than you should have this in your collection. It’s a great sounding big band. 10 out of 10. Gordon Goodwin – Swingin For The Fences
