Jazz-Sax, all things Jazz and Sax
Walt Weiskopf and Ed Rosenberg, have released a great new book, Beyond The Horn. It is more of a follow up to his great Around The Horn book. The 246 pages are filled with Octave Displaced Triads, and a bevy of Octave displaced minor, melodic minor, harmonic minor and a bunch of other modes. Plus,…
Congrats to Gordon Goodwin for winning “Instrumental Arrangement” for his “Incredits”. Sonny Rollins won the “Jazz Instrumental Solo” for “Why Was I Born?”. Wayne Shorter Quartet won “Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group” for “Beyond the Sound Barrier,” and the Dave Holland Big Band won the “Large Jazz Ensemble Album” for “Overtime”. Too bad Gordon…
The NAMM show was last weekend. I found this page listing all the odd offerings there. Of note was Great Mind Saxes. Wow. Interesting stuff. I thought LA Saxes were out there. A Midi trumpet and a metronome in a pen, a Belt Buckle pick holder (perhaps a reed holder like that would be cool?).
There are a couple of books every saxophonist should have in their library. The Charlie Parker Omnibook in Eb, Michael Brecker Collection Vol. 1 and Michael Brecker Collection Vol. 2, Stan Getz and now, The Lighthouse Omnibook. This great collection contains all the solos off Elvin Jones’ Live At The Lighthouse album. This book is…

Kottke.org has posted 50 Things to do with your iPod. A great list of, almost 50 things there. He missed How to get Google Maps on your iPod, plus there is a ton of Podcasts out there. I’ll be adding a section of Jazz/Sax related Podcasts soon.
Since it first came out, I was an advocate for the Jazz Font. I still have the 3.5″ floppy that I bought to use with Finale 3 something. The disc has 1995 written on it. Anyhow, now I see it all over the place. The Jazz text font people use with other fonts. Yikes! And…
PG Music has released the latest, greatest update to it’s awesome Band in A Box program. Backgrounds for Walt Weiskopf’s book Around the Horn in Band in a Box format.
pika writes “What do people think about the metal mouthpieces with spoilers? How much louder do they make you sound(tener sax) because i was thinking about getting one for marching band. Email me if you know anything.” First off, we don’t “email me if you know anything”. That also goes for people who “please email…
Electronic Musician reviewed a bunch of field recorders, including the the Marantz 671, Marantz 660 and the Edirol R1 among others. Basically, they panned the Marantz 671 (successor to the 670, which I love) for having firmware issues causing the mic preamps to be noisy. The Edirol R1 came out on top of the two…
I did this last year. Resurrected it, and cleaned it up a little. It’s a bunch of Christmas Songs put around In The Mood. Score and Parts for Big Band (5 Saxes, 5 bones, 4 trumpets). Enjoy!
About two months ago, I purchased a Oleg Strap to replace my Ray Hyman strap. The Oleg strap is VERY COMFY. Very. It’s leather, and padded, and feels great. Blows away those Neotech straps. However, the cord adjustment drives me nuts. The one thing I loved about the Hyman strap was the easy ability to…
From Steve Goodson: “Jey Clark, owner of Saxology in Berkeley, Ca, passed away last night after suffering a massive stroke on Sunday. I have no other details at this time, but the information was confirmed this afternoon in a conversation with his friend. Jey was a long time friend, a frequent visitor to my home,…

The initial search for a donor (including Michael’s siblings and children) has not yet resulted…
The latest issue of Flute Talk had an Ad on page 37 for Valgon Rings. No no, this is not a strange Star Trek device, nor is it related to the Vogon’s, whom destroyed Earth in Douglas Adam’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. These rings seem to be a serious thing. To quote the ad:…
