Jazz-Sax, all things Jazz and Sax
Greg Fishman has been at it again. This time, he has come out with yet another book of Jazz Etudes. Again, he has named each Etude after a street in Chicago. I’ll just take Greg’s books in lieu of a tourist map if I ever visit Chicago. Really. I believe he’s covered every major street…
When I was in college, I heard the story of Siguard Rascher having a keyless saxophone. Basically, a conical tube in the shape of a sax. Mr. Rascher was reported to be able to play anything on it. Well, looks like you can actually get one and try to be a virtuoso like Siguard Rascher….
hammertime829 writes “I was wondering if anybody could tell me if getting a new neck for a saxophone makes a big difference in the sound or intonation?” Great question. Anybody? I know a guy who plays a Selmer Mark VI with a Yamaha neck………works for him, so he says.
I had rave reviews of Greg Fishman’s “Jazz Saxophone Etudes” book. I really like the tunes in that book. They are melodic, sound great, and are idiomatic of good jazz solos. The concept of including two CDs (one for Alto, and one for Tenor) was, well, fairly obvious (yet no one else does this, ie:…
Ok. Brass instruments have had that Silent Brass system for a while. Most sax players wish they would use it all the time ;-). Now, it seems saxophone players can have something similar. E-Sax is a new case/silent practice thing. Interesting stuff. Looks really funny, but they say it works. You can even do Karaoke…
NOTE – An updated version of this Regimen is available here One of the most downloaded things on Jazz-Sax.com is the Zinn Practice Regimen. It was inspired by Daniel Zinn, master saxophonist/woodwindist when he took over saxophone instruction at CSUH about 10 years ago. I updated it a couple of years ago, and I’ve updated…
Pimsoul writes “I play in a band, on alto sax. The think is, because the drums are loud the bass and guitar is loud, so i have to play loud too. But I can’t always keep up with loudness, so we thought about amplifieing my sax. Because it isn’t good for a normal guitar amplifier…
Greg Fishman has released a great new book titled Jazz Saxophone Etudes. What sets this book apart from others is the addition of two CDs, one for Alto and one for Tenor. You use the same etude for both instruments. So, you don’t have to deal with bad transposition jobs that you find in say,…
ladyzutano writes “Okay. I use a Selmer Tenor series III, and every time I play one of those chic little passages where versatility in the palm keys is required, I can reach the keys only by bending my wrist at an awkard angle. It’s almost a perfect 90 degrees! I tried moving the horn away…
I just received the latest Woodwind/Brasswind catalog. Have you seen the number of companies that make saxophones. Here is the list (in no particular order): BandNow Barrington (advertised heavily in the catalog) Yamaha Amati C.F. Conn Keilwerth Blessing Allora Selmer LA Sax Jupiter Chicago Jazz Series (LA Sax?) Woodwind Brand Yanagisawa Unison (not in the…

So, the other day, I received an email from Jamey Aebersold: Great! That sounds fantastic. I sign up. I get the webinar invite. And…… It doesn’t work. At all. NADA. I mean, first, it’s Webex. Second, NONE of the codes or links worked. Invalid keys. Whatever. It sort of sums up where aebersoldmusic is in…
I’m a HUGE fan of AirTags or a similar tag that works on the AirTag network. I put them on all kinds of things. Except that I frequently don’t monitor the battery status. So say that microphone box, that I want to keep track of, but don’t keep near me a lot of the time……all…

We are in an age of all kinds of neat electronic wind instruments. This one, the Diosynth, looks FANTASTIC. They seemed to have really NAILED the instrument. I especially think their editing software is going to make it stand out. I love the Aerophone 30 and 20, but Roland’s software for it is…….kinda trash. Give…
Interesting video from YouTuber Ian Trewhella. He tries out a Vibrato T1S sax. Actually doesn’t sound all that bad at all. They are around $900.
